Packing plant closures and slowdowns caused by COVID-19 have forced market hogs to stay on farms longer than expected. Kent Nutrition Group's research farm is running a trial of about 400 finishing pigs that tests diet changes to reduce feed intake and weight gain while producers wait for processing space.
Hogs held past market weight add feed cost and create a near-term supply backlog that pressures lean hog prices until processing capacity recovers.
