An epidemic of African swine fever that began in February has killed over 13,000 domestic pigs in Assam, India, according to reports. Infected carcasses have floated down the Brahmaputra River from Tibet, and the disease has decimated pig populations in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts.
Pig losses in northeast India reduce local demand for feed grains and meal, though the regional scale is modest relative to global markets.
