The ECB kept its deposit rate at -0.5 percent and its refinancing rate at 0 percent on December 10. It expanded its emergency bond-buying programme by €500 billion to €1.85 trillion and extended it to March 2022.
The decisions were broadly in line with market expectations.
Because the moves were largely priced in, the immediate market effect is limited. The ongoing liquidity support still favors a weaker euro over time, which matters for dollar-based commodity prices.
