Dario Dongo's FoodTimes article discusses a public consultation on an EU strategy to address deforestation linked to commodity imports. It cites a 2020 European Parliament resolution calling for strict measures on imports tied to deforestation.
The article argues that international demand for unsustainable agricultural commodities harms environmental, animal and plant health.
A consultation signals that the EU is moving toward import restrictions on deforestation-linked commodities such as soy and palm oil. Any eventual rules would be a longer-term factor for these markets.
