An Iowa State analysis of soil moisture in six northwest Iowa locations found that stored subsoil moisture plus 80% of spring rainfall was below the roughly 20 inches needed for normal corn and soybean yields. The analysis projects moisture balances through early September using average rainfall expectations.
A moisture deficit in a major producing area raises the risk of below-trend yields unless rainfall beats average, which supports corn and soybean price risk premiums.
