A ReliefWeb situation report says Sudan's 2021/22 production of sorghum, millet and wheat is estimated at 5 million tonnes, 30% below the five-year average. More than 18 million people need humanitarian aid because of dry spells, crop failure, conflict and economic crisis.
Sudan is a sizable importer of cereals, so the production shortfall adds to import demand for sorghum and wheat in East Africa. The effect on world prices is small compared with major exporters.
