CRU's Chris Lawson says fertilizer prices have reached a record high because of the war in Ukraine and disrupted trade flows, with Russia and Belarus together providing about 40% of traded potash. Nitrogen fertilizer prices have risen fourfold since the start of 2020, and phosphate and potash prices have more than tripled.
Gas curtailments in Europe are further constraining production.
Record fertilizer costs raise farm input expenses and risk demand destruction and underapplication, which could weigh on future grain and oilseed yields. The tight grain and oilseed market makes food price inflation more likely.
