USDA scheduled nearly 7 million commercial chickens and turkeys for euthanasia the week of March 28 after HPAI outbreaks in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, including a 5-million-bird layer operation in Osceola, Iowa. Dried egg product prices have more than doubled since early March, and over 17 million birds have been destroyed.
Sharp layer losses reduce egg output and push up egg and egg-product prices, while the flock cull reduces feed demand modestly. The effect on feed grain prices is limited relative to the egg market.
