The Conversation article, republished by PotatoPro, warns that phosphorus supply is increasingly disrupted. About 85% of the world's remaining high-grade phosphate rock sits in five countries, with 70% in Morocco alone.
It notes that phosphate fertiliser prices rose about 800% in 2008.
Heavy concentration of phosphate reserves in a few countries creates a risk of sudden price spikes for DAP and rock, which raises the cost of crop nutrition and ultimately feed grains.
