Industry groups say the upgrade will cut barge lockage time from hours to about 30 minutes and save farmers around 1.5 cents per bushel per lock.
The project is multi-year and affects future logistics costs rather than near-term supply, so it has little immediate price impact but lowers long-run barge transport costs for Midwest grain.
