Drewry analysis says China's grain import strategy is shifting toward domestic self-sufficiency, with imports falling 13% year on year and Mexico overtaking China as the largest grain importer in 2024. China aims to meet nearly 90% of its grain needs through domestic production by 2032.
Structurally lower Chinese wheat and corn imports weaken global grain demand and tonne-mile demand for panamax vessels, which bearishly affects ocean freight and export prices for grains.
