India banned exports of non-basmati white rice, its largest rice export category, after retail rice prices rose sharply following monsoon damage. The category covered roughly 10 million tons of the 22 million tons India exported last year, and parboiled rice was excluded.
India supplies over 40% of world rice exports, so this ban removes a large share of global supply and is likely to push international rice prices higher.
