FAO issued a high-alert recommendation for African countries after H5 HPAI killed wild Great White Pelicans in Senegal and Mauritania. Senegal reported 758 pelican deaths among 883 birds affected.
Virus detections in West and Southern Africa raise the risk of spread to other countries.
The alert concerns wild bird mortality and surveillance in Africa, with limited immediate effect on commercial feed markets. It is a warning of possible future poultry outbreaks.
