Argentina grain exports halt as maritime pilots strike over Milei decree

Maritime pilots walked off the job on Aug. 3 to protest a Milei decree that deregulated river navigation services, halting ship entry and exit at Argentina's grain ports.

At least 45 vessels were affected by the strike, according to the CIARA-CEC business chamber. Argentina is the world's largest exporter of soybean meal and oil and a major supplier of corn and wheat.

A port bottleneck on the Parana River restricts Argentine export supply of soymeal, soyoil and corn and lifts prices for these products. The size of the disruption and the number of affected vessels make it a meaningful driver.
