A study in Communications Earth & Environment, published April 24, 2026, finds that flash droughts reduce US crop yields, with the largest impacts during the reproductive stage. The authors estimate long-term national yield losses of 2-7% and attribute most of the effect to soil moisture stress.
Evidence that flash droughts cut national yields by a few percent supports a higher weather risk premium in corn and soybeans when rapid drying hits during pollination or pod set.
