The IAEA is hosting an expert meeting in Vienna from 12-16 December with eleven countries, including Cuba and the United States, to review a Sterile Insect Technique project against New World Screwworm. The pest remains a threat to livestock in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the US has recently seen an outbreak in Florida.
A screwworm outbreak threatens livestock health and could trigger movement restrictions on cattle and other animals, tightening supply in affected regions. The impact on feed-ingredient prices is limited, so the price effect is modest.
