CME live cattle futures closed higher on June 23 ahead of the USDA Cattle on Feed report, supported by short covering and discounts to cash. Cash cattle in the Plains fell to $118-$123/cwt from $127-$134 a week earlier, and May cattle placements hit a 10-year high for the month.
Heavy placements add to future feedlot supply and are mildly bearish, while the sharp drop in cash prices and slack seasonal beef demand weigh on cattle values.
