The USDA's July WASDE cut its 2017 US milk production forecast by about 400 million pounds to 216.3 billion pounds and lowered its 2018 forecast by 500 million pounds. Projected 2017 and 2018 Class III prices were reduced in line with lower cheese and whey values, while Class IV prices were raised on higher butter prices.
Lower Class III forecasts signal weaker prices for cheese-based milk, which weighs on the Class III milk price used for dairy-based feed pricing. The smaller supply forecast partly offsets this, so the net effect is a modest bearish signal.
