Western Canadian yearling prices rose $3 to $5 for the week ending May 18 as grass buyers competed for cattle, even for 800-pound-plus animals. Heavy precipitation, with over 200 percent of normal rainfall in most of Western Canada, supported pasture demand, while Alberta pen conditions were rated poor.
Stronger grass demand and favorable pasture conditions support feeder prices and reduce feedlot placements, which can lessen near-term barley and grain demand from Canadian feedlots.
