The European Commission set the import duty on maize, sorghum and rye at €5.16 per tonne from 8 August, triggered by ample supply and low maize prices. The rule is based on the EU cereal import duty regulation and the gap between the EU reference price and US maize prices.
A duty increase raises landed costs of imported feedgrains into the EU, cutting import demand and pressuring US and other exporter prices.
