Lean hog futures fell sharply in the week ending Sept. 23, with the October contract hitting contract lows and losing nearly $10 during September.
Pork bellies and hams dropped, with Mexico reportedly pulling back from the U.S. market during NAFTA talks, and the pork cutout fell to near last year's levels.
Weaker pork demand from Mexico and lower cutout values reduce the margin for packers and push hog prices lower as record production continues. Lower hog prices can reduce hog producers' feed buying.
