Harvest began in southern Iowa, where farmers in dry areas reported yields better than expected. One Ottumwa farmer measured about 150 bushels per acre on field edges, and an 85-acre field averaged 190 bushels.
About 30% of Iowa's corn had reached maturity by September 17.
Yields in the drought-hit areas are better than feared, which eases concern about a sharp production shortfall and limits price upside for corn.
