The USDA announced a $100 million New World Screwworm Grand Challenge to spur detection, containment and eradication technology. The parasite has been confirmed about 70 miles from the Texas border, with active cases in Tamaulipas, Mexico.

A screwworm incursion into the US would threaten cattle movements and herd numbers, creating supply uncertainty for feeder and live cattle. Containment measures could tighten feeder supplies and add cost pressure along the chain.
