UNAM's Biotechnology Institute publicly endorsed GMO crop use in agriculture in November, through a 500-page book produced by 17 Mexican scientists. The book argues there is no evidence of damage from transgenic cultivars and that Mexican farmers should be allowed to adopt them.
Academic support for GMO cultivation could eventually ease Mexico's restrictions on biotech corn, which would affect long-term import and production patterns for corn and soybean meal, though the impact is not immediate.
