The US Energy Department's Short-Term Energy Outlook projects average on-highway diesel at $2.95 per gallon in 2018 and $3.01 in 2019. That is an 11.2% rise over 2017 for this year, but a smaller increase than the 14.8% jump seen in 2017.
A forecast of higher diesel costs raises freight and fuel expenses for feed delivery and trucking. Prices are expected to stay relatively stable, so the cost impact is moderate.
