CN and CP executives told a House of Commons agriculture committee in Ottawa how they are clearing the prairie grain backlog, including recalling retirees, delaying vacations, hiring and leasing locomotives. Grain producers have asked the federal government for an order-in-council forcing minimum grain volumes to be moved.
A possible federal order forcing minimum rail volumes would speed grain exports and ease the export bottleneck, while continued delays keep Canadian grain and canola prices supported.
