A Nature Communications study from Aalto University finds that large-scale climate oscillations, including El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Indian Ocean Dipole, affect up to two-thirds of the world's cropland. The researchers say improved forecasting could help agricultural planning.
The findings reinforce that ENSO and related cycles drive yield variability in corn, soy, rice and wheat, which supports risk premiums when forecasts shift, but the study itself does not signal an immediate supply change.
