Quantum Foods reported that the first six months of its financial year, ending March 31, were shaped by the 2017 highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak and by lower raw material costs. Yellow maize prices on SAFEX fell 33% and landed soybean meal costs fell 6% versus the prior-year period, following a record maize harvest and a stronger rand.
Lower maize and soybean meal costs reduce feed input prices for South African poultry producers, while weaker local demand after avian flu limits upside for feed grains and meal.
