The European Parliament adopted by 354 to 53 an own-initiative report by MEP Heidi Hautala calling for an EU action plan to ensure no supply chain or financial transaction linked to the EU causes deforestation. The report also urges binding measures in EU trade agreements.
Stronger EU deforestation rules could raise compliance costs and restrict imports of commodities such as palm oil and soy over time, though this is a non-binding parliamentary call.
