USDA's weekly Grain Transportation Report says flooding closed six locks on the Upper Mississippi River as of October 10, halting export-bound barge shipments from points north of Lock 22 near Hannibal, MO. Water levels at Lock 22 are not expected to return to navigable levels until October 23.
Union Pacific and BNSF also issued grain embargoes at the Texas-Mexico border due to rail congestion.
Stalled barge traffic on the Upper Mississippi backs up Midwest grain and raises freight costs, which tends to weaken basis in origin markets and firm Gulf cash bids. The rail embargo adds to the export logistics bottleneck.
