France's national strategy against embodied deforestation from imports of soy, palm oil, beef, cocoa and wood held its first steering committee meeting on 7 May 2019. Officials said international support for deforestation initiatives is weak, citing opposition from Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and the United States.
Calls for deforestation-linked import restrictions on soy and palm oil add long-term demand risk for those commodities, though no immediate supply change is announced.
