President Trump said a $16 billion farm and ranch aid package for producers hurt by the China trade war would be paid for with tariff revenue from Chinese goods. The White House announced the package hours before the event, with $14.5 billion in direct payments to grain, oilseed, dairy and pork producers.
Direct payments can keep farmers planting and holding acreage despite weak export demand, which limits downside in prices for corn and soybeans. The package does not restore lost Chinese purchases, so the trade dispute remains bearish for export-oriented crops.
