A University of Illinois study using county-level crop insurance data from 1981 through 2016 found excessive rainfall reduced U.S. corn yields by as much as 34% relative to expected yield in some years. Drought and extreme heat caused losses of up to 37% in some years.
The findings were published in Global Change Biology.
The study frames excess rain as a yield risk comparable to drought, reinforcing concern over the current flood-delayed Midwest crop and supporting firmer corn prices.
