More than 21,000 US dairy operations enrolled in the Dairy Margin Protection Program for 2018, with about 60 percent of the US milk supply covered. Most enrolled farms chose higher buy-up coverage levels, up to $8 per hundredweight, after changes in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018.
Heavier margin protection coverage can support farm income and milk output stability, with limited immediate effect on milk prices.
