The rupiah weakened 0.45% to 14,180 per dollar on Friday, August 2, as Bank Indonesia linked the move to Trump's announced plan to raise tariffs on China. The rupiah had begun weakening after Fed Chair Powell signaled the Fed would not cut rates aggressively.
The currency fell 1.14% over the week.
Dollar strength driven by Fed signals and tariff escalation raises the rupiah cost of dollar-priced feed imports. Higher import costs in Indonesia can dampen feed demand and affect soymeal and corn purchasing.
