Palay (unmilled rice) farmgate prices in the Philippines have fallen to P7-P8 per kilo, below the P12 per kilo price of darak (rice bran), which millers are raising by P2 per kilo as farmers hold back harvests. The Department of Agriculture expressed concern and is seeking measures to restore farmgate prices.
Darak is a feed ingredient for hogs, ducks and chickens, so its rising price raises local feed costs even as the paddy price collapses. Cheap imports under the Rice Tariffication Law are the main pressure on prices.
