The October USDA Cattle on Feed report was close to trade expectations, with September placements at 2.1 million head, slightly above estimates, and marketings at 1.7 million head. Cattle on feed totaled 11.3 million head, 99% of a year earlier, and the heifer share rose to 39.1%.
Third-quarter beef slaughter was up year over year.
Lighter placements at heavy weights and a higher heifer mix support near-term live cattle prices and signal fewer replacement heifers ahead. Steady feedlot inventories limit additional feeder supply pressure.
