The European Commission's 2018-19 EU feed protein balance sheet shows total feed supply and feed protein self-sufficiency fell slightly as drought reduced forage growth. The EU used 180.7 million tonnes of crops for feed, of which 153.4 million were EU-origin, and imported 54.1 million tonnes of oilseed meals, with only 16.3 million from the EU.
Heavier reliance on imported corn and soybean meal raises EU feed buyers' exposure to world prices and freight, supporting import-linked meal demand.
