Philippine farmers are facing falling unmilled rice prices after the Rice Tariffication Law lifted import restrictions in February. The law sets a 35% tariff on ASEAN rice imports and 40% on imports from outside ASEAN, and it is aimed at curbing inflation.
Cheaper imports under the new tariff regime pressure domestic paddy prices and shift Philippine demand toward foreign supply, which is bearish for regional rice prices.
