North Sumatra has allocated Rp 5 billion to bury pigs that died from African swine fever, with at least 29,200 deaths reported. Local authorities first thought it was classical swine fever, and the Agriculture Ministry confirmed ASF in 16 regencies on December 12.
Pork consumption has fallen as residents avoid the meat.
The loss is regional and small against national Indonesian demand, so its effect on feed and pork prices is limited, though falling local pork demand trims feed use slightly.
