USDA's Economic Research Service projects US rice imports in 2019/20 at a record 32.5 million hundredweight, up 9% from a year earlier. Growth is driven by demand for Asian aromatic varieties and cheaper Chinese rice shipped to Puerto Rico.
Record import demand reflects strong competition for the domestic market, which can pressure US rough rice prices as imports replace domestic supply.
