IEEP published its response to the European Commission's public consultation on deforestation and forest degradation, which closed 4 March 2020. The Commission aims to assess regulatory and non-regulatory measures, with a legislative initiative expected in 2021.
IEEP welcomed the EU's recognition as a major importer of agricultural commodities.
A future EU law restricting deforestation-linked imports could raise compliance costs and limit supply of soy, palm and cattle-linked products into Europe, a longer-term upward pressure on those commodity prices.
