The South African rand weakened more than 2% on Friday, almost twice the decline of any other major peer. The slide followed a drop in Brazil's currency and came a day after South African policy makers surprised investors with a larger-than-expected interest-rate increase.
Emerging-market currency weakness across Brazil and South Africa can lower dollar prices of their agricultural exports and add pressure to global feed prices. The rate hike shows policy responses to the sell-off.
