EU soy imports linked to illegal deforestation in Brazil

Trase and Brazilian NGOs ICV and Imaflora found that 19% of soy imported from Mato Grosso to the EU in 2018, worth about US$295 million, came from farms linked to illegal deforestation. The EU imported roughly 3.9 million tonnes of Mato Grosso soy that year, mainly for animal feed.

Heightened scrutiny of Brazilian soy for EU feed buyers could push some buyers toward certified or alternative origins, affecting soymeal flows and regional basis.
