The rand fell alongside the Chinese yuan and euro as the dollar rebounded for a fourth day, driven by US-China tensions and uncertainty ahead of the November election. The rand moved above R17.00 per dollar after Fed Chair Powell said the central bank had used all the tools it could think of.
A stronger dollar and weaker emerging currencies raise the local-currency cost of imported feed ingredients, while US-China tensions add risk to Chinese purchases of US feed grains.
