India's Lok Sabha passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which limits government regulation of food supply, including stock limits, to extraordinary circumstances such as famine, war or steep price rises. The bill replaces an ordinance that was part of a set of agricultural marketing reforms.
The minister said stock limits would be tied to price rises.
Narrower stock-limit powers reduce the risk of forced Indian grain and pulse sales, which could leave domestic supply less constrained and modestly ease world price pressure.
