Pakistan's rice exports rose 74.8% year over year to a record $3.68 billion in fiscal 2023-24, according to State Bank of Pakistan data. The surge followed India's export curbs imposed in 2023 and extended into 2024 to hold down domestic prices before the general elections.
India is reportedly considering easing curbs by cutting the basmati floor price and replacing the parboiled rice export tax with a fixed duty.
Indian export restrictions have shifted global rice trade to Pakistan and other suppliers, supporting world rice prices. Possible Indian easing would return supply to the market and could weaken prices and Pakistani market share.
