Brazilian meat packers have asked the agriculture ministry to allow live cattle imports from Paraguay, but ranchers in Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso oppose the move over sanitary risks. Brazilian cattle costs have risen as record beef exports to China reduced domestic supply.
If imports are approved, extra Paraguayan supply could ease tight Brazilian cattle prices, though sanitary disputes could delay or block the move.
