USDA's Grain Transportation Report says year-to-date downbound barged grain volumes on the Mississippi reached 25.2 million tons through August 14, 20% above 2020 and 14% above the five-year average. Strong Chinese export demand has driven the volumes, but spot barge freight rates have not risen and have mostly declined since January.
Strong barge volumes support corn and soybean export flows through the Mississippi system, but flat-to-falling freight rates signal ample barge capacity and limit upward pressure on basis and freight costs.
