USDA announced a $100 million New World Screwworm Grand Challenge to spur detection, containment and eradication technology for the flesh-eating parasite. The article says the pest has been confirmed about 70 miles from the Texas border, with active cases in Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Applications are due February 23 under APHIS administration.
A screwworm incursion into U.S. cattle would threaten herd health and could force further border closures to Mexican cattle, tightening U.S. feeder and fed cattle supplies and supporting prices.
